WHY SEATTLE ?

WHY DID YOU CHOSE THIS CITY? I CHOSE THE SEATTLE WATERFRONT BECAUSE SIMILAR TO THE BROOKLYN WATERFRONT SEATTLE IS ALSO REBUILDING ITS WATERFRONT AND IN MY OPINION THE RESULTS WILL BE GREATER THAN BROOKLYN’S WATERFRONT.  READING ABOUT ITS HISTORY AS WELL AS HOW THE CITY OF SEATTLE AS GROUP FOUGHT TO TAKE BACK THE WATERFRONT BY BRINGING DOWN THE ALASKAN WAY VIADUCT, INSPIRED ME TO RESEARCH MORE INTO THE WATERFRONT. ONCE THE CONSTRUCTION IS DONE AND THE WATERFRONT HAS ITS NEW SEAWALL THE WATERFRONT WILL LOOK COMPLETELY NEW AND SEATTLE WILL ONCE AGAIN BE ABLE TO ENJOY THE WATERFRONT ITS BEEN WAITING FOR.

WHAT WAS THE WATERFRONT USED FOR IN THE HISTORY? I WOULD SAY THE SEATTLE WATERFRONT WENT TO A HUGE PROCESS,AND IS CONTINUING TO GO THROUGH A TREMENDOUS PROCESS TO CREATE A WATERFRONT FOR SEATTLE. IT STARTED WITH NATIVE AMERICANS AND THERE CANOES,TO HAVING A RETARAUNT AND HOTELS FOR WORKERS TO STEAMER COMPANIES, AS WELL AS CARGO SHIPPING, TO FINALLY CREATING PARKS AND AQUARUMS FOR THE SOCIETY OF SEATTLE.
WHAT CAUSED THE CHANGE AT THE WATERFRONT? THE CITY WANTS TO CREATE NEW PUBLIC SPACE AND WANT TO TAKE BACK THE WATERFRONT OF ELLIOT BAY.
WHAT ARE THE NEW USES? THE CORE PROJECTS INCLUDE A NEW PEDESTRIAN PROMENADE, TWO-WAY CYCLE TRACK, AND NEW ALASKAN WAY THAT ACCOMMODATES ALL MODES OF TRAVEL. THEY ALSO INCLUDE TWO REBUILT PUBLIC PIERS, NEW PARKS AND PATHS, AND NEW PEDESTRIAN CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE CITY AND WATERFRONT.

WHAT ARE THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS AND THE ACCESS TO THE WATERFRONT? WASHINGTON STATE FERRY, ELLIOT BAY WATER TAXI,BICYCYLE, CAR, MINI BUS, COACH BUS, HISTORICAL STREETCAR AND MODERN STREET CAR.
IS THERE BOAT OR WATER ACCESS? THE WASHINGTON STATE FERRY RUNS FERRIES FROM THE COLMAN DOCK (PIER 52) OTHER FERRY AND BOAT SERVICES ALONG THE WATERFRONT INCLUDE THE ELLIOTT BAY WATER TAXI, THAT RUNS BETWEEN MAY AND SEPTEMBER EACH YEAR FROM SEATTLE TO WEST SEATTLE, ARGOSY CRUISES, OFFERING MANY DIFFERENT LEISURE CRUISES FROM PIERS 55 AND 56 ON THE WATERFRONT, AND THE VICTORIA CLIPPER, WITH POPULAR RUNS TO THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS AND VICTORIA, B.C. FROM PIER 69 ON THE WATERFRONT.
HOW DOES THE WATERFRONT ATTRACT PEOPLE? THE SEATTLE WATERFRONT IS A SPAN OF PARKS, PIERS, FERRY AND SHIP TERMINALS, PROMENADES AND PUBLIC SPACES, STRETCHING FROM PIONEER SQUARE ON THE SOUTH TO SHILSHOLE MARINA ON THE NORTH. HIGHLIGHTS ALONG THE WATERFRONT INCLUDE SEATTLE AQUARIUM, MYRTLE EDWARDS PARK, SEATTLE ART MUSEUM'S OLYMPIC SCULPTURE PARK, TWO CRUISE SHIP DOCKS, THE WASHINGTON STATE FERRY TERMINAL, DOCKS FOR ARGOSY CRUISES AND THE VICTORIA CLIPPER AND MANY MORE ATTRACTIONS.
What are the amenities?
What type of retail/commercial/residential are at the waterfront?
WHAT TYPE OF PUBLIC SPACES ARE THERE? SEATTLE AQUARIUM, MYRTLE EDWARDS PARK, SEATTLE ART MUSEUM'S, OLYMPIC SCULPTURE PARK,PIER 62/63,PIKE PLACE MARKET,WATERFRONT PARK, STEINBRUECK PARK,REGRADE PARK,WESTLAKE PARK,CITYHALL PARK,OCCIDENTAL SQUARE,MCGRAW SQUARE PARK,HING HAY PARK.
Who uses these spaces?
WHAT IS SUCCESSFUL ABOUT THIS WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT? WHAT I FIND MOSTLY SUCCESSFUL ABOUT THIS PROJECT IS THE FACT THAT SEATTLE COMPLETELY CHANGED THE LOOK OF THE WATERFRONT AND WILL CONNECT THE WATERFRONT TO SEATTLE DIRECTLY, WHICH WILL ATTRACT MORE OF SEATTLES SOCIETY TO VISIT THE WATERFRONT. I ALSO THINK THE PUBLIC SPACES ARE VERY SUCCESSFUL. FOR EXAMPLE THE REIMAGNED WATERFRONT PARK. THIS WOULD BE A GREAT SPACE FOR FAMILIES TO COME SEE VIEWS OF ELLIOT BAY WHILE THE CHILDREN HAVE FUN IN THE WATER SPRINKLERS. THIS PARK WILL ALSO BE USED FOR EVENTS AND PERFOMANCES. SO THEY TAKE ONE SPACE AND TURN IT INTO A MULTIPURPOSE SPACE.

WHAT IS NOT SUCCESSFUL ABOUT THIS WATERFRONT? WHAT I FOUND UNSUCCESSFUL WAS THE FACT THAT THE ELLIOT BAY SEAWALL IS FALLING APART AND WITHOUT THE SEAWALL SEATTLE CANNOT HAVE A WATERFRONT. SEATTLE IS REDESIGNING IT AND WILL BE RECONSTRUCTED BUT IF IT WASN’T FALLING APART THE WATERFRONT WOULD HAVE BEEN BUILT QUICKER.
